The award-winning, specialty lighting design allowed natural light to flood in the West Shore Public Library.

HARRISBURG, PA -- Brinjac Engineering, one of Pennsylvania's leading engineering firms, has received the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America's (IESNA) International Illumination Design Section Award of Merit for lighting design work completed at the West Shore Library in Camp Hill.

"The International Illumination Design Award (IIDA) is presented to Brinjac Engineering for excellence in interior lighting design," Sheila Martin, Illuminating Engineering Society Susquehanna Section and IIDA chair, said. "A nonbiased panel of judges was assembled from outside Central Pennsylvania to review those projects nominated in Susquehanna. A point value was assigned to each project according to specific criteria, including complexity of the problem, lighting concept, architectural integration, originality, performance criteria achieved, visual comfort, energy effectiveness, budget restrictions and ease of maintenance."

In providing lighting design services for the West Shore Library, the Brinjac team focused on comfort, flexibility and energy usage. Working in partnership with H2L2, a nationally recognized Philadelphia-based architectural firm, the Brinjac team integrated light fixtures into architectural details to conceal the equipment from view while prominently highlighting the clean architectural lines.

By aligning indirect light fixtures with architectural elements, the team made it possible for the library to move or change the bookshelves and stacks without changing the lighting. To distribute light more effectively, the light was bounced off the ceiling and onto vertical surfaces. This approach decreases the occurrence of eyestrain and fatigue by dramatically reducing shadows and veiling reflections.

"The West Shore Library is a superb example of the expertise of our lighting design team," John M. Brinjac, P.E., Brinjac Engineering president, said. "We are proud to accept such a prestigious award validating the design team's exceptional talent and commitment to outstanding performance."

The International Illumination Design Awards program of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) provides a unique opportunity for public recognition of professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design based upon the individual merit of each entry judged against specific criteria.
